Joker reclaims the number one spot on a dead weekend

Joker has already claimed the best global box office for an R-rated film ever but it wanted one last number one weekend before it (probably) begins its slow fall out of the top ten given the slate of films beginning to land in the build up to the holiday season. The move just beat out Maleficent: Mistress of Evil with $18.9 million. There wasn’t much else opening this weekend so it’s not that big a surprise those two films stayed at the top.

The fresh films didn’t do so well, though both were low budget so returns are enough to make the studios happy. Black and blue landed with $8.3 million while Countdown came in with $9 million. Probably the biggest surprise in a weekend that’s pretty dull is that The Addams Family stayed in third with $11.7 million, just beating out Zombieland: Double Tap by less than $100,000.

This weekend on the whole felt like Hollywood wasn’t sure what to do with it. Usually we get some solid horror but it seems like not even Countdown could deliver that. November, however, should turn it all around as we begin awards season in earnest.
