Josh Brolin and Tim Burton will cry “Sanctuary!”

Stop the bloody presses. Tim Burton’s planning a movie that doesn’t involve Johnny Depp. After his adaptation of Dark Shadows and his update to Frankenweenie, Tim Burton will be collaborating with Jonah Hex-star Josh Brolin on a new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Brolin is attached to produce and star, though there is no word if he’d be playing the titular hunchback or a different role. At present, Burton is only attached to the project as a producer, though there is speculation he may choose to direct as well. The script will be written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, writers of the horribly-titled Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

This could go either way. On one hand, Tim Burton’s proved time and again over the past decade that he’s basically lost his touch. On the other hand, he’d be working with someone other than Johnny Depp on this project. Hunchback, if done as a more strict adaptation of the book, could offer some seriously dark stuff. Rape, murder, French people; what more do you need?
