Jurassic World: Dominion will wrap up the six-film saga, not just the sequels

Jurassic World: Dominion

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Colin Trevorrow off-handedly mentioned that Jurassic World: Dominion will be a conclusion to the six-film Jurassic Park saga instead of just a finale for the sequels. Intended as a “celebration of the whole franchise,” I guess the dinosaurs are going full Disney, now. This kind of echoes the sentiments shared about The Rise of Skywalker before it released, which was wrapping up the “Skywalker Saga” despite how Return of the Jedi was pretty final.

“To me, [Dominion] is a culmination of one story that’s been told,” Trevorrow told EW. “When you got to the end of the Jurassic Park trilogy, it may not have been as clear in what the complete story of those three movies was because they were a bit more episodic in the way that they were approached…When you watch Dominion, you really feel like you are learning how much of a story that first set of movies was and how everything that happened in those movies actually informs what ultimately is able to happen in this.”

He’s not wrong that the original three films felt disconnected, but they were never meant to form a complete trilogy. Author Michael Crichton only ever wrote two novels in the series with the filmmakers then moving onto their own stories. In that sense, Jurassic World had a clearer throughline because it was developed specifically to have one. That doesn’t mean Jurassic World: Dominion needs to wrap up storylines that are over 20 years old.

This also makes previous comments about Dominion really confusing. Back in May of 2020, producer Frank Marshall stated that this sixth film would be “the start of a new era.” That certainly doesn’t sound like a conclusion and it makes me wonder what is going on with the film.

Whatever happens, we won’t need to worry about it until next year. Jurassic World: Dominion isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until June 10, 2022. I’m sure by then, we’ll know if the series can sustain another few decades of existence.
