When Fox was originally consumed by Disney’s giant wallet, it seemed that risky attempts at R-rated superhero movies were going to be a thing of the past, but since then Warner Bros has all but thrown everything it’s got into darker, more adult-oriented material. The above trailer for Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is just the latest example–and I’m not sure an R rating is going to be enough to save it.
Maybe if you were more invested in the years-long track leading up to this, you’d feel differently, however. Following 2014’s Justice League War (which was rated PG-13), Justice League Dark: Apokolips War will see the Justice League, Suicide Squad, and Teen Titans team up to battle Darkseid on a destroyed Earth.
This war to end all wars is supposed to have bloody violence, but you won’t see that in the trailer. What we have is a lot of stiff acting and shoddy animation by my estimation, and I can’t say it makes much of a first impression. I don’t know if it’ll be as bad as the extraneous boning Batman subplot in The Killing Joke, but I’m more enthused for the not-all-that-much-better-looking Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge.
Justice League Dark: Apokolips War will hit VOD on May 5, 2020 before coming to Blu-ray on May 19.
