I wish my history class in high school focused more in interesting little ideas. Sure, we knew the broad history of the world, but it was taught in a very boring manner and we never found out some of the more interesting aspects of history. For example, there was a part of the Roman army, the Ninth Roman Legion, that just completely disappeared in 120 AD while questing off in the mists of Scotland. What happened to them? Did someone manage to defeat one of the legions of the primary power in the Western world?
Director Kevin Macdonald, known most recently for State of Play, explores this historical footnote in The Eagle, a film about the son of the Ninth Roman Legion’s commander and his slave who venture into Scotland to recover the eagle standard and restore his father’s reputation. The film is based on the 1954 novel The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff. Channing Tatum attempts to swallow his accent while starring as Marcus Aquila, the commander’s son, and Jamie Bell plays his British slave Esca.
The trailer, while intriguing, does give away the plot too much, so you should only watch half of it.
