Generally speaking, the Korean films that make it to over to our shores are pretty modern. You don’t see a lot of movies from the 1990s on store shelves, let alone from the 1940s and ’50s. Fortunately, the Korean Film Archive has stepped in to fill the void. The Archive’s Youtube channel has 70 films ranging from the 1940s through the 1990s available for you viewing pleasure at no cost. Which is awesome.
As for recommendations… I don’t have any. I haven’t seen a single one of the films. I feel terrible about that. I know of a couple of them, and they’ve been on a “To Watch” list of mine, but I’ve never even heard of the vast majority of them. If I want to call myself a Koreacinephile (is that a word? probably not), it’s time to get started.
And that goes for you too.
