As if 2020 couldn’t get any worse, Disney and Lucasfilm have just announced the existence of The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special. As the name implies, this is a riff on the infamously terrible 1978 TV film that reunited the cast of A New Hope for some ridiculously stupid holiday on planet Kashyyyk, just in Lego. Also, it follows up the events of The Rise of Skywalker, so it’s already doomed to fail.
A press release given to major outlets reveals some details of the plot. “The special will reunite Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, Rose and the droids for a joyous feast on Life Day, a holiday first introduced in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. The new LEGO special is the first to debut on Disney+ and will continue the rich legacy of collaboration between Lucasfilm and LEGO—playful adventures told in the endearingly irreverent way that only LEGO Star Wars co-branded content can.”
The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is slated for release on November 17, 2020, on Disney’s streaming service. The cast listing hasn’t been revealed, though Disney has stated most of the film’s actors will return. John Boyega is likely a given, but it would be seriously sad if no one else could be bothered to reappear for this.
