Say what you will about how garbage the writing, pacing, and general direction of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was, the biggest sin was that Disney shoved actress Kelly Marie Tran and her character Rose Tico into the background after years of online abuse. In a clear effort to kowtow to a bunch of cowards on the internet, it robbed the character of any kind of arc she might have had in a better film. Thankfully, Disney isn’t continuing to leave her in the dust.
As announced by the House of Mouse today, the upcoming Lego Star Wars Holiday Special will be featuring a ton of returning cast members from the sequel trilogy, most notably Tran as Rose Tico. After the hellscape that has been 2020, at least there is some good news here. Tran will be joined by Anthony Daniels (C-3P0) and Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) as returning cast members. Interestingly, Disney hasn’t announced if Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, or Mark Hamill would be returning alongside them.
I’m still not quite sure why Disney decided to trudge up memories of the absolutely abysmal original holiday special, but I guess the company just can’t keep its hands off Star Wars. Thankfully, this won’t be some theatrical release, but a Disney+ exclusive that will begin airing on November 17, 2020. That it includes Tran makes me at least somewhat interested in viewing it, if only because she deserves better than to be remembered as getting bullied off social media by basement dwellers.
