Flixistonians! If you’ve been following the site for a while, you’ve probably realized that I’m a huge proponent of saving historic movie theaters from being repurposed or demolished. Well, here’s a chance for me to put my money where my mouth is.
The Portage Theater, located on 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave. in wonderful not hell-swamp Chicago, IL. The Portage is the current home of the Silent Film Society of Chicago, The Chicago Cinema Society, The Chicago Horror Film Festival, and The Northwest Chicago Film Festival. In addition to being host to many different film organizations, the theater also shows independent and classic films. And who can beat a $4 Wednesday afternoon?
The theater is currently facing closure and being converted into a church. If you have a love of movies, local businesses, or some combination of the two, I urge you to check out the links provided after the break. But above all, if you live in Chicago, go support this theater.
