Locke and Key reportedly coming to Netflix

Back from the dead

Locke and Key is one of the darlings of the comic horror scene, for as long as I have been into comics people have always suggested that I read it because it's so well written. Unfortunately, I am poor and can't afford every book and my library doesn't carry it so I was SOL. But when there was news years ago of an adaptation being developed by Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, and the soul-shattering Never Let Me Go) it got me excited, but the show fell into development hell and lay dormant for years.

Then last year it was revealed that Hulu had ordered a pilot to be developed by IT director Andy Muschietti and LOST showrunner Carlton Cuse. Hulu apparently outbid both Netflix and HBO for the rights but eventually passed on the pilot for reasons unknown two months ago. Enter Netflix.

In an unconfirmed report by The Hollywood Reporter yesterday, it was revealed that Netflix has given Locke and Key a direct to series order on an entirely new pilot that is yet to be filmed. Talk about confidence. Muschietti will not be involved in this new pilot due to his commitment to IT 2 but Carlton Cuse will still be involved, LOST fans and haters rejoice or recoil, your choice.

Locke and Key tells the story of an old house in Maine, whose doors have keys that open pathways to other dimensions. The house which is occupied by a family who recently lost the patriarch also houses a demon who would do anything to get the ability to go to other dimensions. The comic that ran from 2008 to 2013 under IDW Publishing was written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez.

No word on when the series will make it to your streaming box but I wouldn't expect it until sometime next year as they are starting over from scratch.
