Madea opens big but can't top Hidden World

Box office round up

There have been nine films in the Madea film franchise, with Madea's Family Funeral reportedly the last one. I have seen none of them. I feel kind of bad about this since their clearly culturally important and, honestly, a pretty big landmark in cinema given their steadfast success in the face of criticism and their ability to draw in minority audiences that don't show up to the movies as often. Plus, the really do make a lot of money.

Family Funeral pulled in $27 million over the weekend, the fourth largest for the series. It couldn't, however, topple the powerhouse that is How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, as the movie took a 45% tumble but still managed to bring in $30 million. It's a bit of a drop but the film is already ahead of where the industry thought it would get so things are looking up for Universal.

The only other wide release film to open this weekend was Greta, and it couldn't break the top five. Aside from the fact that it wasn't very good, audiences gave it an abysmal C- CinemaScore and it really didn't have any hype leading into the weekend. It may go on to have a bit of a cult following as a B-movie favorite of some, but I can see this one dropping out of the top ten as early as next week.
