Malick and Reiner contributed to Good Will Hunting

Well that mystery is solved…

Flixist hasn’t reported much on Terrence Malick’s untitled film because, well, there just hasn’t been much to report. We don’t even really know anything about Tree of Life and that film is already finished. What is known is that Ben Affleck will star and… yeah you didn’t misread that it’s a Terrence Malick film starring Ben Affleck.

Badlands Malick. The Thin Red Line Malick. That Malick.

Ever since it was announced, film journalists have sought answers. What was the connection that brought about this strange bedfellows scenario? The most anyone could dig up was Malick’s name in the Special Thanks portion of Good Will Hunting’s end credits. We have your answers after the jump.

Terrence Malick wrote the ending to Good Will Hunting. Well, no not exactly. He certainly made his mark on it though. For those of you who remember it fondly, Matt Damon’s character had to “see about a girl” and drove off into the sunrise pursuing the one that got away. This was not the original ending. In fact, it had been set up that Will and Skylar would drive off together until Matt and Ben explained it to Terrence Malick, who is or was apparently best friends with Affleck’s godfather (what?). That whole misty morning drive towards Will Hunting’s lost love was his idea, as well as the notion that leaving town was the real emotional turning point for that film.

This link will bring you to a short, but great read on this topic as well as even more surprising info on Rob Reiner suggesting the “action-filled subplot involving the CIA” be taken out of the now modern classic.
