This isn’t our first look at Mary Magdalene but the trailer might as well be the film has been delayed from a US release so long. With Rooney Mara starring as the titular character and Joaquin Phoenix in the role of Jesus himself, the film was originally getting a big push as Oscar bait back when it was shot in 2016, with a release date of last March. However, The Weinstein Company kind of blew up, if you remember, and so the movie just sat.
Thankfully, IFC Films scooped it up and we’re going to get to see it on the big screen next month. It really does look like a stunning film, but I’m guessing the delay in release and lack of buzz will keep it from amounting to much in awards season. Still, jovial Joaquin Phoenix is exactly how I’d want Jesus to be and a fair shake for Mary Magdalene is, of course, timely as all hell.
Mary Magdalene will release on April 12, 2019.
