While continuing on with the Bourne films after Jason Bourne’s story had ended turned out to a bad idea after all, Matt Damon still entertained the thought of possibly returning to the franchise if everything aligned correctly before the release of Legacy:
If we can make one where we go into it feeling it can be even better than those, and it ends up being in that same ballpark, then we should do it. But If we can’t, then we really should leave it alone.
After Legacy‘s release, however, Damon has had a change of heart…granted he has yet to see Legacy:
…from what I understand, it kind of relives [The Bourne Ultimatum] from a different perspective…What that means, because they use our actors and characters, is that whatever they said [in Legacy] is true and so we’d have to acknowledge it in any Bourne movie that we’d do. And that makes it really tough…I don’t think we can do the Dallas it-was-all-a-dream scenario. I don’t think the audience would go for that after they paid money to see a movie.
Seeing Damon being kickass again would be super cool, but I do have to respect the man that realizes that Bourne always had an entertaining arching storyline to carry the trilogy and wasn’t just ass kicking. It’s also nice to know that there’s still an actor out there who wouldn’t just sign up for the money rather than its potential to be badass. And given the fact that Universal is going to churn out as many sequels as they can regardless of sense, Damon may have gotten out while the gettin’s good.
