McG (I shudder every time I realize someone gives a person named that money to direct) had a nice long discussion with Collider recently about basically every movie he’s making ever. The most interesting disturbing part is when he invokes the name of Baz Luhrman in order to describe the angle he’s going to take with his dream project, an adaptation of the Broadway musical Spring Awakening.
The poorly named director said “It’s my version of Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story. I’m going to do it with a Baz Luhrmann take on artistic privilege and the manner in which it looks, because it’s 19th century Germany, but it’s today. I can’t wait to do it. I love the music, and I love the story, and I love the relatability. It’s basically youth against establishment, and there’s always room for that.”
Just think about the aesthetic vomit that a Bax Luhrman-styled McG film would be. No, wait stop. I don’t want to make you vomit from that much “artistic privilege.” I don’t have any great affinity for Spring Awakening or anything, but I’m pretty sure that combination of styles won’t do it any good.
