The Post is going to be a good movie. It’s basically a movie made to win Oscars. It’s got Stephen Spielberg directing with Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks leading. That’s basically Oscar catnip. Throw in an all too relevant plot about the importance of free press, and there’s just no way that this movie isn’t going to be all over the place come nomination time.
You can check out the trailer, and see that it looks gorgeous and hits all the right points. I’m sure Hanks and Streep will be stunning in this, but I’m not sure if it is doing anything really original. Spielberg is a prolific directory, but sometimes he can get a little sterile in his direction. Of course sterile Spielberg is still some of the best film making around so I’ll be happy to take it.
The Post will open limited on December 22 so it can snag Oscar nominations and then go wide on January 12.
