Flaunting the vibrant colors and rich history of Mexican and Central American indigenous peoples, Maya and the Three is the upcoming animated miniseries from filmmaker Jorge Gutierrez (The Book of Life), now with a confirmed October 22nd Netflix premiere date.
Maya follows its titular princess (voiced by Zoe Saldana) on a hero’s journey to fulfill a classic prophecy to thwart a malicious, magical threat. Maya‘s premise might sound familiar, but its the gorgeous animation (something about that lighting and the vibrant palette) and pluming of Central American history for its fantastic sights that should put this high on the lists of animation fanatics everywhere.
Besides the gorgeous visuals, Maya and the Three boasts a massive cast of incredible talent including Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal, Rita Moreno, Alfred Molina… and many, many more. Pair this with Gutierrez’s penchant for cinematic homage (we all caught that Warriors reference in the trailer, yes?) and Maya is bound to be a smash. The filmmaker cites everything from Kill Bill to Ninja Scroll as an influence on some of Maya‘s many scraps, indicative that even though this will be an adventure for the whole family, there’s a clear level of action-packed appreciation and knowledge behind the (digital) camera.
