If you’re going to murder someone and steal their identity, a traveling preacher is a very solid choice. I’m hard-pressed to think of a better option, really, so all you traveling preachers out there best be on the lookout. The next murderous fugitive on the run might be coming for you!
Take The Quarry as a cautionary tale, in which Shea Whigham plays just such a fugitive. He kills a traveling preacher in Texas and takes up the robes and Bible, teaching sermons on forgiveness (projecting more than a little bit, I’m sure) and instilling faith in the community. But when a body turns up in a quarry, police chief Micheal Shannon is dead set to out the preacher for the murderer he is.
It’s odd to me that Micheal Shannon often plays a cop or authority figure, and every single time he comes off as more evil than the people he’s pursuing. Shape of Water? Definitely evil. Boardwalk Empire? Crazy evil. Nocturnal Animals? Dying of cancer only makes him all the more evil.
Being the one who didn’t kill anybody, I have to assume Shannon is the force of justice in The Quarry, but I’ll be damned if he doesn’t seethe a sinister air. It could just be me, or maybe there’s more going on here than meets the eye. We’ll find out when The Quarry turns up in theaters and on VOD on April 17, 2020.
