Monster Hunter might be a certified flop over in China thanks to its controversial “joke,” but that isn’t stopping Sony from trying to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible. In a move likely meant to combat Wonder Woman 1984’s release on Christmas day, Sony has moved the release of its video game adaptation to December 18, 2020, for North America.
While I do truly believe this is because of Warner Bros. putting Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max and potentially snatching eyes away from Monster Hunter, the more cynical side of me thinks this is Sony attempting to cash in on the recent hubbub around the film. With Chinese viewers noting a racist line and Chinese cinemas pulling the film from screenings, Sony probably just wants to make whatever it can before the Twitter pitchfork crowd stops caring completely.
I honestly don’t know if that will matter as most people probably won’t ever learn of said controversy in the first place. Despite how prominent the internet has become in the daily lives of a ton of people, there’s a vast majority that just does not follow day-to-day news on upcoming media. I suppose ignorance is bliss, but whichever way you want to view it, Monster Hunter is now coming a week earlier.
