It’s been almost two years since we learned Jared Leto would be playing Morbius in a self-titled film about the Spider-Man villain. One of the lesser-known in Spidey’s rogue’s gallery, just hearing that Leto was attached and that Sony was the driving force behind the project didn’t give many hope. With a new “teaser” trailer out in the wild, I’d be surprised if anyone has any hope left.
As if to prove everyone’s negative assumptions correct, this new trailer for Morbius is pretty dull. Generic action shots, lame CGI, and a hokey cover of a piece of classical music: this trailer has everything. Surprisingly, Leto isn’t miserable as the character, but we also don’t really see much of the film.
What’s more interesting for Marvel fans is what seems to be an Easter egg related to the recent PS4 Spider-Man game. Last year, Sony added a costume based on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man to its hit open-world title. The promotional image it used is now in Morbius with the word “MURDERER” painted over it. This is likely a continuation of Far From Home’s ending, but with a nice nod to both Sony’s game and Tobey Maguire’s take on the character.
Anyway, Morbius looks like a dud. Considering Venom wasn’t very good and went on to make nearly $1 billion, I don’t think Sony really cares. Maybe we should get some C-tier superhero films more often. They’re certainly far more interesting than the super calculated, safe as hell MCU films.
