Waaaaay back in 2011, Geoff had mentioned that small bit of news that Kevin Tancharoen (the Mortal Kombat: Legacy, failed Hunger Games pitch, and Glee: The 3D Concert Movie guy) was getting the chance to make a fully fleshed out reboot of the narratively sound Mortal Kombat film series. Since there hasn’t been any news of it since then, I’d figured that the project got quietly swept under the rug. Turns out that’s not the case.
According to Warner Bros’ Lance Sloan, the MK film is still kicking and even has some monies:
Kevin Tancharoen directed the digital series for us. Before that he did a renegade video that he put up on YouTube. And we sent the piracy people after him, to take it down and put him in jail. And cut to a couple months later he was directing the digital series for us. And now he is at the helm of a forty, fifty million dollar feature.
Wait…40 or 50 million? Is that a lot anymore? Probably not. Maybe WB has no confidence that Mortal Kombat is still a thing, but after the recent game, I’m not sure how that’s true. Oh well, I’m sure whatever this turns out to be will be great. Wait, you’re saying that a rumored story for the upkoming reboot involves some average guy in a grocery store getting superpowers? Wait, are you also saying that all but two of the Legacy web series episodes were terrible? I could probably stand to wait even longer for this if both of those things were true.
