Mortal Kombat short becoming web series

Kool news for Mortal Kombat fans. Remember that short film based on the MK series that circulated the Interwebs last year? It starred Michael Jai White (Spawn) as Jax, and despite all the deliberation as to its purpose, turned out simply to be an independent project by director Kevin Tancharoen, whose only other substantial film credit is Fame (2009). Were you one of the many that hoped the short would be made into a feature film? Well, continue to be disappointed on that front, while we tell you about the next best thing!

Our friends at Destructoid have happened upon the news that Tancharoen’s short film will be adapted into a 10-episode web series, produced by Warner Brothers, with White locked in to reprise his role as Jackson “Jax” Briggs. Tancheron will script the series, which will begin shooting next month in Vancouver, with a little help from Todd and Aaron Helbing, who write for Starz’s Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Mortal Kombat has to be the only fighting game in history that I was able to master. I was excited as all hell when the first movie came out and don’t remember being disappointed, but I had lower standards back then. In the absence of something greater, I will except this offer of a web series based on MK and will continue to hope that an even bigger, flashier project gets off the ground some day.
