MoviePass gets kicked in the balls, cancels service

0

Remember that Netflix-like movie ticket service we told you about yesterday that would let you see as many movies you want at anytime for a $50 a month subscription fee? You know...MoviePass? You don't remember? It was just yesterday, what do you mean you don't remember?! Well it doesn't really matter anyway, because that program is already cancelled. Life is so fleeting, you know?

It was just yesterday when a New York start up MoviePass announced it was beta testing in the San Francisco area and were in negotiations with major online ticketing services and major theater chains to expand their user's options. As it turns out, they didn't even bother to get clearance from theaters they said were participating in the program. Both AMC and Landmark spoke out clearly against the program, stating that they were never contacted and even went as far as promising they will have no part in the program...at all. Ouch.

Though reps at MoviePass have confirmed that they are cancelling their test run in San Francisco and are taking a "temporary hiatus", it's safe to assume that this idea is pretty much dead on arrival. It's a damn shame too considering the idea of unlimited movie tickets for a monthly fee was really appealing. It's a rather bonehead move to announce this program and go forward without clearance from the actual theater, but what are you going to do other than sing Boyz II Men's "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye to Yesterday" and pour some liquor out?
