Disney has shared a new trailer for its upcoming live-action Mulan remake and um…I don’t know. I love the set design and am happy the cast is all Asian, but this really doesn’t look all that good. Maybe it’s just that Disney is holding back all the action for the final film (which would be smart), but something about this film makes it out to be a little dour.
I’m not concerned about the lack of musical numbers or Mushu -in fact, I’m happy this film is finally different from Disney’s other live-action remakes-, but Mulan appears a little overly serious. It does deal with heavy subject matter, so maybe I’m just not impressed with this short glimpse. Trailers usually don’t get much out of me.
Regardless of my misgivings, the cast is excellent and this is bound to at least look nice. The cinematography is solid, too. We’ll just have to find out when the film released in March 2020.
