Tonight is the big game and everyone will be tuning in to see some new ads! It’s funny how the actual game doesn’t mean nearly as much as the promotions going into it, but that’s the consumerist world we live in. The future dystopia is certainly a lot less…interesting than I thought it would be.
Anyway, Disney has a new trailer for Mulan that is airing during the game and it gives us our best look at the rest of the cast yet. We finally get to see Jet Li as the emperor say something. He’s magnificent! I know that’s a hyperbolic statement, but I think his casting is an absolutely inspired choice. The dude is a legend.
I do wish we got to see more of Cheng Pei-Pei, but her role isn’t even that big (she plays the matchmaker). Gong Li looks excellent as that witch lady, though. Man, all of these Hong Kong actors I idolized growing up are a part of big-budget Hollywood films now. I honestly can’t believe it.
The verdict is still out on Mulan, but I think it looks solid. It’s kind of typical for a wuxia action movie, but at least it’s something different from the animated version. Disney’s latest crop of live-action remakes have been so pointless because of their strict adherence to the source material. This one looks to finally break the trend.
