Netflix and Derek Kolstad have announced plans to adapt Ubisoft’s smash hit stealth game franchise Splinter Cell into an animated series, exclusive to the streaming platform.
Though little is known about the project, presumably we’ll follow the exploits of titular splinter cell (read: special black ops butt-kicker) Sam Fisher, though there’s room for other characters to fill out the lead role. Still, fingers crossed for longtime Fisher actor Michael Ironside to return to the role. Ubisoft seems more receptive to that considering Ironside made a return to the role for both Ghost Recon Wildlands and Breakpoint in some cross-over missions.
The Netflix series is said to already have two seasons in the pipeline, for a total of 16 episodes. How this relates to the long-rumored feature film adaptation of the franchise–if that project still exists at all–remains to be seen.
With its popular Castlevania series going strong, and a newly-announced adaptation of Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma, Netflix is rapidly becoming the de facto home of video game anime for the western palette. Here’s hoping the Splinter Cell series breaks records as well as necks.
