Netflix is producing Chicken Run 2 for all of the 90s kids that have grown up

In an absolute surprise bit of news, it seems like the 2000 hit film Chicken Run is going to be getting a sequel soon. Netflix UK & Ireland broke the news that the streaming service has acquired the rights to create a continuation of Aardman Animations’ classic claymation film some 21 years after its original release. That seems to be the magical timeframe for smash hits that were overlooked in their day to get sequels once they become cult classics.

Along with the news, Aardman revealed a plot synopsis on its website.

Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they’re breaking in!

As for production notes, Chicken Run 2 will be directed by Sam Fell (of ParaNorman fame) and produced by Steve Pegram (Arthur Christmas) and Leyla Hobart. Executive producers Peter Lord, Carla Shelley, and Karey Kirkpatrick will be returning from the original for this new installment. The script will be penned by John O’ Farrel and Rachel Tunnard while Nick Park (creator of Wallace and Gromit) will be consulting on the project.

I’m not sure why now was the right time, but I’m happy Chicken Run is still a big thing.
