Netflix Now: No-Name Westerns Edition featuring Roy Rogers

I would think that Netflix Watch Instantly would try to add movies in a more balanced manner, but it’s another week dominated by a single genre. This time, it’s Westerns, which offer you a huge selection of titles you’ve probably never heard of. Oh wait, there are a bunch of them featuring Roy Rogers, who you’re probably familiar with as the namesake of the smalltime fast food chain for cowboys. I’ve gotten more into Westerns over the years, but the majority of these all look like low-budget by-the-numbers genre films. Anyway, maybe you’ll enjoy Roy Rogers as he lies beneath California stars, Nevada skies, and moons of both the harvest and Texas varieties.

One of the best things you could add to your instant queue this week is Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. But if award-winning fiction isn’t your thing, there are some good documentaries in there, like Exit Through the Gift Shop, a film by the famous graffiti artist Banksy. Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work comes from filmmakers who previously covered the Darfur genocide, but the only related film this week is Attack on Darfur – by Uwe Boll. (It actually looks decent.)

Walt & El Grupo provides a look into Disney’s 1941 goodwill tour in South America, one of my favorite classic Disney periods that led to films like Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros. Disney’s less-inspired modern output is also included in the form of Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, whose subtitle I can only hope means Phish is out of a job. The Vampire’s Ghost makes me stop and think too hard — a vampire…that’s a ghost? — and Bob Hope plays a spy in My Favorite Spy, even if he’s not my favorite. And finally, we see the long-awaited sequel to last week‘s breakout hit Example 30 Minute 23.976, Example 2 Hour 23.976. The additional running time really allows the filmmakers to play with our expectations of what can be accomplished in 23.976 frames per second.
