I wouldn’t have thought the sci-fi follow-up by James Gray, acclaimed independent filmmaker behind the likes of The Lost City of Z and The Immigrant, would be the film to get the big marketing push that Ad Astra has received. But less than a month away from its release, here we are we yet another new trailer.
Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is an experienced astronaut tasked with a mission of great importance (nicely, we still haven’t been totally spoiled as to just what exactly McBride’s gotta fix), with the fate of humanity seemingly tied to his allegedly-dead father (Tommy Lee Jones). “Hi son! I’m alive! And in space!” To support the two McBrides is a wealth of terrific actors including Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland. Always happy to see Sutherland in something new.
As mentioned, this new trailer from Fox highlights the grand space-scapes of Gray’s film, certainly appearing here a worthy candidate for its full-blown IMAX release next month. Shot by the incredibly talented cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (known best perhaps for his work with Christopher Nolan on Interstellar and Dunkirk), there’s good reason to believe Ad Astra will be an all-around pretty film, besides the pretty people.
We shall see when Ad Astra hits theaters September 20th, with its debut appearance at the Venice Film Festival scheduled for the end of August.
