Marvel Studios have unveiled another trailer for Black Widow, the overdue solo feature for everyone’s favorite Soviet Avenger. With Scarlett Johansson returning to her iconic character, the new trailer features scenes from the first look we got as well as some brand new footage confirming that, yup, it’s more MCU madness!
Certainly Black Widow looks to play into it’s titular super spy’s decidedly un-super powers, with shootouts and good ‘ol fashioned explosions taking priority over any web-slinging or lightning striking we may have grown accustomed to over the past few Marvel releases. Although those had explosions too, right?
My chief concern is that Taskmaster, seemingly the film’s chief antagonist, is done justice. Since his debut in the Avengers books in the ’80s, the skull-faced mercenary has been an offbeat stalwart in Marvel’s rogues gallery, and a personal favorite.
With Marvel catching flak over the “creative differences” departure of director Scott Derickson from the Doctor Strange followup Multiverse of Madness, it reminds to be seen whether Disney can keep these films worthwhile and fresh. When they’re on, the MCU’s films are epic, impressively-staged and faithful to their source. When they’re off they can all sort of melt together in a stew of “been there, done that” familiarity. Here’s hoping Black Widow ends up as one of the good ones.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow opens May 1, 2020.
