New Japanese Godzilla movie in the works from Toho Studios

Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla got generally positive reviews and did good business at the box office, grossing $521.9 million worldwide. And yet the American Godzilla was full of boring humans (except for Bryan Cranston) who got in the way of a good ol’ monster mash. (I mean, really, did anyone care about Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character?)

Perhaps Toho Studios can remedy that problem with a new Godzilla movie set for 2016.

That’s right, there will be a new Japanese Godzilla movie next year, with the working title Shin Gojira (New Godzilla). This is the first Japanese Godzilla film since Ryuhei Kitamura’s Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of everyone’s favorite fire-breathing pseudo-dinosaur.

Production on New Godzilla is currently underway, co-directed by Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (the live-action version of Attack on Titan). There’s speculation that the movie will combine practical man-in-suit Godzilla action with CGI, much like the effects in Attack on Titan.

How do you feel about a new Japanese Godzilla movie? How do you think it will stack up against the 2014 Gareth Edwards movie? And do you think the man behind Neon Genesis Evangelion is the right person to reboot Godzilla? Discuss in the comments section.
