By When I was at the Disney D23 Expo this summer, it felt like you couldn’t walk ten feet without seeing something about Prep and Landing. My ex-girlfriend explained it to me but I still didn’t get it. All it did was hammer in the point that I’m old. This was further proved by the fact that I had no idea what the hell I was watching two weeks ago when the Disney channel was on at the pizza place I was at. I was pretty sure that Selena Gomez was in a new show, but it turns out that Disney has just mastered the art of cloning. Basically, it’s dawned on me that I am behind the times, clinging to the nostalgia of the 90’s, being left behind as a new generation who doesn’t even know what Boy Meets World is inherits the earth. …That is bleak. Thanks a lot, Prep and Landing.
Anyways, speaking of nostalgia, we have some new releases to help turn any existential crisis around with the fantastic coming-of-age sci-fi action-adventure film Super 8, the deceptively entertaining Conan the Barbarian remake, and the fourth installment of Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids franchise (which may or may not include Smell-o-Vision). Say what you want about Spy Kids, if All the Time in the World is what Rob-Rod needed to get out of his system in order to make Sin City 2, that’s fine by me. Also Bucky from Captain America plays Saddam Hussein’s son’s body double in The Devil’s Double.
Disney has re-released not one but two Beauty and the Beast features (Belle’s Magical World and The Enchanted Christmas), The Three Amigos is out on Blu-ray, and Criterion gives us not only 12 Angry Men but also Rushmore! The epically long, epically racist silent film Birth of a Nation also comes out on Blu-ray today. I am seriously interested in seeing what kind of special features it has.
