By Ben Affleck’s Argo is the big release of the week given all the momentum it has heading into the Oscars. Based on the true story of how Jack Kirby helped saved the day, Argo won Best Picture and Best Director at the 2013 BAFTA Film Awards as well as the 2013 Golden Globe Awards.
Other major releases on DVD and Blu-ray include Anna Karenina with Keira Knightley, Sinister with Ethan Hawke, and the teen-com Fun Size. Special mention goes to Atlas Shrugged II: The Strike for being the movie no one wanted or watched. Conservative icon William F. Buckley Jr. once said that he had to flog himself to finish reading Atlas Shrugged, which is probably what it’d feel like to watch the film.
Loads of re-releases worth noting. The Criterion Collection is putting our Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront starring Marlon Brando, for one. Two Arnold movies get Blu-rays: The Running Man and a remastered version of The Terminator. Top Gun hits Blu-ray like a skull slamming into the jettisoned canopy of a fighter jet. The silent classic The Thief of Bagdad starring Douglas Fairbanks gets a re-release. Monsters Inc. gets deluxe collector’s editions to prep people for Monsters University. And the fun-as-hell misfit kid movie The Monster Squad gets the Blu-ray treatment, finally.
Someone better tell Sulley and Mike to steer clear of those goobers in the Monster Squad. Things could get ugly.
