New Releases, week of 8/31/13: The Replacements Edition

I know there was some crazy stuff that happened in the music industry over the weekend that everyone’s been talking about on the internet, so I figured we should address the matter here on Flixist. I’m speaking, of course, about the reunion of The Replacements. First time on stage in 22 years… though, without the late Bob Stinton or the retired Chris Mars. Basically it’s Paul Westerberg & Tommy Stinson with replacement Replacements, but hey, I’ll take it. Also, Miley Cyrus did something that doesn’t matter.

Some high-profile new releases this week on DVD and Blu-ray. The big ones are Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain. Rounding out the new releases are the Ice-T-produced documentary Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp, the Spanish action film Unit 7, and a really great-looking French animated film called The Painting from director Jean-François Laguionie.

On the re-release side, the big ones are both from Criterion: Ernst Lubitsch’s To Be or Not to Be and a box set featuring some early films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (Love is Colder Than Death, Katzelmacher, Gods of the Plague, The American Soldier, Beware of a Holy Whore).
