In a blisteringly-contemporary update of the outlaws-on-the-run genre, we today get our first look at Queen & Slim from director Melina Matsoukas, who previously worked on HBO’s Insecure as well as promotional shorts for Beyoncé.
Starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith as a couple on their first date, the night quickly turns for the worse when a trivial encounter with law enforcement turns fatal. Terrified and fleeing the scene, the couple hit the road and soon garner a reputation as “outlaws,” seemingly destined for a Bonnie and Clyde-esque crash…
Immediately Queen & Slim feels plausible in an America where, it feels like every day, we see viral videos of innocent black people held up at gunpoint by police officers over things like picking up garbage or a child holding onto a toy. It’s the kind of tension you can’t make up.
With leads as strong as Turner-Smith and Kaluuya (whose role in Widows was one of the best performances of last year, I’d wager), Queen & Slim has a real shot at joining the road movie greats. We can find out for certain when it hits theaters November 27, 2019.
