On television, Star Trek is advancing at warp speed. Discovery is a couple seasons in, multiple short films have released, and Picard will arrive soon to fulfill every Trekkie’s dreams. On the big screen however, the future of the franchise is less certain. Paramount has had troubles with Chrises walking out of negotiations, and a director leaving to work on Game of Thrones. Fortunately, a spark of life has appeared this week. Deadline reports that Noah Hawley has been hired to write and direct the next Star Trek film.
The new film is reportedly part of the Kelvin timeline (the alternate timeline in which the last three films have taken place). It is even said to star the same cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban. I know that the Kelvin timeline gets a bad rap among Trekkies, but I love it. Star Trek 2009 is one of my all-time favorite films. It is brilliantly imaginative and perfectly cast. I do hope we get to spend more time with these characters.
I think Noah Hawley is certainly a man with creative vision. The only work of his that I’ve seen is Legion, but that show is one of the most unique and compelling television experiences I’ve ever witnessed (especially in the first season). Based on that show, he understands character drama and science fiction. He also has visual flair. I hope these skills will transfer to his Trek film.
Deadline does report that Paramount is still working on the Tarantino Star Trek film, which I am personally not excited for. I think the man is a genius, but his approach to the art form of cinema is completely antithetical to Trek. Of course, if it ever does get made, I’ll still go see it.
