I think it’s fair to say that Nicolas Cage is not a man known for disappearing into roles. If there’s one common complaint I hear about the Academy Award winner from people who think he’s “cheesy” it’s that he’s always playing himself in every role.
How do I respond to this? By admitting that yes, that’s true, but so do many beloved actors including The Rock? No. I just calmly explain that they’re idiots who don’t understand that he’s been preparing for exactly one role for his entire life–himself. And now we can mark our calendars, for we have learned exactly when Cage at his Cagiest will grace screens across the nation: March 19, 2021.
This is the date Lionsgate has announced it will release Tom Gormican’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. In this film, Nicolas Cage will play a fictionalized version of himself who’s facing financial ruin (imagine that!) and must accept a million smackers to attend the birthday part of a superfan. While there, bullets start to fly, and Nicolas Cage must channel all of his most beloved on-screen roles in order to live up the legend and save the day–and oh my god, I feel like a ten-year-old boy watching Nicolas Cage feel the wind in his mullet again. Needless to say, with over a year to wait I’ll be dying for this movie by the time it actually releases.
Expect a nonstop slew of tangentially related non-stories that I only write as an excuse to mention The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (the title even steals my heart!) in the 13+ months leading to it’s release.
Let’s just hope it doesn’t get delayed.
