When Step Brothers first came out it was marked as a middling comedy and I think most people forgot about it. But over the years its gained a bit of a cult following, which I don’t fully understand since it’s neither Will Ferrell or director Adam McKay’s best outings. It did offer up some quotable lines, though, so maybe that’s enough for people to be really hopeful for a sequel nine years later.
Don’t hope too hard. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Ferrell basically shot down any good chance of another one happening.
“You have to resist the temptation. It’s just tough because the things everyone wants you to do sequels of are special because there’s not a sequel of it. I guess we’ll see, but as of now there are no plans. We just don’t want to be doing sequels of everything.”
That’s not an outright no, but it doesn’t sound too good for a return to form. Honestly, even if I loved the film I don’t know that I’d want another one. We all saw what happened when Achnorman 2 landed. It was a bit of a mess, and felt forced often. As McKay points out later in the interview, why do something if there’s nothing to really do?
