By This was a historically bad box office weekend, folks. With next to nothing coming out except for the not-so-buzz-worthy Miss Bala and a Super Bowl taking over most folks attention, no one went to the movies. Though Glass can now claim three weeks in the number one spot that’s barely a great achievement in a weekend that only created $55.4 million in revenue. That’s the worst Super Bowl weekend since 2000 and the worst weekend in general since September 2017.
I doubt anyone is too upset over this as it couldn’t have been that unexpected given what was in theaters. Miss Bala opened a little soft, but Sony never expected that to be a big hit or anything. The negative reviews and audience reaction to it will also probably drive folks away for the future. It’s too bad because the original movie was fantastic and a mostly Hispanic film-crew with a Hispanic female lead is now tarnished in Hollywood’s eye because that’s how the industry works.
What we can all cheer about is Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old landing an insane $8.3 million from just three even screenings and then $2.4 million over the three-day. Way to go awesome documentaries!
