By The 11th annual Japan Cuts film festival kicks off tonight in New York City. Running from July 13th through July 23rd, Japan Cuts is one of New York City’s finest film festivals, showcasing the best in Japanese cinema. I still remember going to Japan Cuts in 2007 during my first summer in New York. I saw Tetsuya Nakashima’s Memories of Matsuko, which remains one of my favorite movies of all time.
All screenings for Japan Cuts take place at The Japan Society. This year’s key screenings include:
- Opening Night: Yoshihiro Nakamura’s MUMON: The Land of Stealth
- Centerpiece: Nobuhiro Yamashita’s Over the Fence
- Closing Night: Sunao Katabuchi’s In This Corner of the World
The film lineup also includes Sion Sono’s ANTI-PORNO, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Daguerrotype, and a restoration of Seijun Suzuki’s accalimed 1980 film Zigeunerweisen. Check back with Flixist for reviews of select films at the festival.
