The first official trailer for It: Chapter Two is up, and it’s looking really good. We open with Jessica Chastain as grown-up Beverly visiting her childhood home, and if I were in charge I would have let the trailer begin and end here. It’s a great scene. The old lady who currently lives in the house gets increasingly horrific by turns. Her mannequin-esque freeze is well-timed, and how she picks herself back up seals the deal. And if The Shining taught us anything, it’s that a naked old woman with torn, decayed skin is always terrifying.
The rest of the trailer is just a clip show giving hints at blood baths and showing off the look of the Loser’s Club as adults. It’s fine but doesn’t strike me with the same menace. Trailers are always in such a mad dash to show you so much that you often feel pretty little. Still, that final shot of the buck-toothed clown is chilling.
The first It was great, and this doesn’t seem to be losing any of that momentum. I’m very much looking forward to checking it out when the film floats to theaters on September 6, 2019.
