By In the least expected news of the day, it turns out that Guillermo Del Toro’s brilliant Pan’s Labyrinth is getting adapted for the stage. Not just that, but it’s being adapted as a musical. Already written by Del Toro and Jeremy Ungar, the play has just picked up a lyricist (Paul Williams, who wrote Kermit the Frog’s “Rainbow Connection” with Jim Henson) and a composer (Gustavo Santaolalla, who has won two Academy Awards for his work). In short: there’s some serious talent working on this thing.
Part of what made Pan’s Labyrinth so incredible were the ridiculously detailed make-up effects, and I can see those translating to the stage brilliantly. The whole artificiality of the dream world could absolutely work on a stage. The war scenes I don’t think will translate quite as smoothly, but since it’s primarily drama rather than action, even that should work without too much effort.
The more I think about this, the more amazing it sounds. I don’t want to get my hopes up too high, but if this thing hits Broadway, I’ll be first in line to buy tickets (at the student rush box office, because Broadway tickets are way too goddamn expensive).
