Paranormal Activity is the new Saw and I’m okay with this

I didn’t see Paranormal Activity, but the trailer for its sequel showed me all I needed to know. I saw Paranormal Activity 2 at midnight the night it came out, like most movies, and it was pretty cool. The daughter, played by College RoadTrip’s Molly Ephraim, stole my heart, and with a third installment due out next October, it’s likely she’ll be back to woo me once more.

Lest I spoil anything for those who haven’t seen Paranormal Activity 2, join me after the jump for my theory on the most likely scenario for Paranormal Activity 3.

SPOILERS AHEAD. You were warned.

Ali Rey (Ephraim) was on a field trip when her demon-possessed step-aunt Katie (Katie Featherston) came back to the Rey household, deftly murdered Ali’s father Dan (Brian Boland) with a Solid Snake-esque neck snap and step-mother Kristi (Sprague Grayden) with a Falcon Punch. She then made off with their infant son Hunter, disappearing off the face of the Earth. Ali returned to her house several days later to discover her parents dead and her baby brother missing. If you stick around through the credits, you can hear Hunter crying at the very end, implying that he’s still alive.

As I see it, PA3 would follow Ali as she documents her search for Hunter/quest for revenge. Maybe she’d bring along her boyfriend, maybe he’d tell her she was crazy and she’d set off on her own. Either way, she’s pretty hot, and I’d follow her to the ends of the Earth. Taking the franchise away from fixed security camera footage to a much more free-hand form would help keep it fresh, and continuing the story the first two films have laid out makes a lot more sense than dropping a fresh family into a similar situation.

Either way, with the Saw franchise over (so they say), it’s only logical that a similar low budget/high return series step up to the plate for annual Halloween installments, and we at the Flixist offices are pretty okay with that.

Like I said before, I’d follow Molly Ephraim anywhere. A third installment of Paranormal Activity is as good a place as any. Mark October 21st, 2011 on your calendars, ladies and gents, and prepare to welcome back the new king of Halloween.
