A few weeks ago, actor and comedian Patton Oswalt made internet headlines when he appeared on the television show Parks & Recreation and delivered an epic filibuster rant about how the new Star Wars episodes, currently being made by J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot, should be made.
This past weekend Patton Oswalt also made an appearance as a speaker at this year’s Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) for a question and answer session. Naturally, one of the first things that was brought up was his now famous filibuster. He revealed some behind the scenes info about the clip – including the fact that it was all done in one take! Read on after the jump for more from Patton Oswalt.
On his experience working with Amy Poehler and the cast and crew of Parks & Recreation, Oswalt said:
“They told me that they just needed me to talk for a minute in the background while Amy [Poehler] and John Glaser had this quick discussion, and what I didn’t know is that Amy [Poehler] and Aziz [Ansari] and the writers were like, just don’t yell cut and just see how long he’ll talk. Because I know all the guys on the show so it was just ‘Let’s see how long he’ll go.’ And also because I’m a huge fan of Parks & Rec and I was very excited to be booked on the show, so I was very much like ‘Oh god I want to do a good job so badly,’ so I think that they sort of sensed that and said ‘Let’s just see what he does.’ And that’s what I did. I just kept going. In my mind I was trying to find a way, I was gonna use, [The Fountain] as a way to pull in Patrick McGoohan from The Prisoner somehow, but my mouth literally just dried up.”
“And of course, nothing shows me how realistic what I did was as when I read the comments online people and are like, ‘Oh uh, so uh, Hawkeye and Black Widow are second tier and and yet you bring up Moon Night which I find …’ My character is such a douche basically [and] I was doing every argument that I had seen online and then I just got the same arguments back.”
And in case you were wondering, when Oswalt was later asked his real opinion about the new Star Wars movies, he replied that he was “skeptical, but hopeful.”
