It’s getting to the point where there are so many streaming services that I’m afraid of unknowingly writing the same things in every news article I write about them. Here’s a new tidbit, though: NBCUniversal and Comcast finally have a name for their upcoming service, which is launching in April 2020. Prepare for Peacock.
The peacock, other than being the majestic bird it is, has also been the recognizable mascot of NBC for the entirety of its broadcasting existence. As many people know after the internet made a fuss about it, The Office will eventually leave Netflix and will be found exclusively on Peacock. That show will be joined by Parks and Recreation, which is currently on Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video.
Bonnie Hammer, Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises said per a press release:
“The name Peacock pays homage to the quality content that audiences have come to expect from NBCUniversal – whether it’s culture-defining dramas from innovative creators like Sam Esmail, laugh-out-loud comedies from legends like Lorne Michaels and Mike Schur, blockbusters from Universal Pictures, or buzzy unscripted programming from the people who do it best at Bravo and E!. Peacock will be the go-to place for both the timely and timeless – from can’t-miss Olympic moments and the 2020 election, to classic fan favorites like The Office.”
Along with A.P. Bio, which was canceled by NBC and revived for Peacock, original shows like Dr. Death, “based on the true-crime podcast” and starring Jamie Dornan, Alec Baldwin, and Christian Slater, a Battlestar Galactica reboot by Mr. Robot and Homecoming executive producer Sam Esmail, a reboot of Saved by the Bell, and new shows from Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers will be on the service at some point.
There’s a lot more content to sift through in their press release, yet still no exact launch date or specific pricing models. Check out the official release for a more comprehensive list of films and television shows.
