As we’ve expressed here on Flixist before, there’s just something about the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise that is fun and makes you eager to see another–wait, not like, ‘Oh boy I can’t wait for them to make another POTC that will easily gross $600M!’ But more like, one day, out of the blue, a new POTC trailer is on TV, or pops up as an ad while you’re waiting for GI Joe PSA video to play on YouTube, and you sort of smile happily.
POTC4 (On Stranger Tides) was borderline reprehensible–I think–see, I can’t really remember; it’s all sort of a haze. And even POTC3 (At World’s End) was suffering from less vitality than its two predecessors–but again, I’m not sure! The bad hasn’t really stuck with me. What has is, Johnny Depp owning a role as fervently (and successfully) as few actors ever do, for the better part of a decade and a half now. The iconic music, the fantastical action and romanticized era of swashbuckling, seafaring brigands (i.e. seaborne murderers) is lighthearted fare that is quite easy to re-immerse oneself in.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales drops in theaters May 26, 2017, so be sure to leave room in your Memorial Day drinking schedule for the (they’re calling it, not me) final adventure.
