Keeping things appropriately jolly and juvenile, the first trailer for Disney and Pixar’s Luca transports us to a the blue skies and clear water of the Italian Riviera. Soaking up the weather and food one summer, Luca’s life is a picturesque boyhood. But it isn’t all vongole and baccalà. The discovery of something… fishy leaves the boy with a secret to keep, and a new friend to learn from.
Directed and written by Enrico Casarosa, a Pixar vet taking his first shot at feature directing, Luca looks to be an idyllic ode to growing up and waxing on the nostalgia of one’s past summers of leisure, though the introduction of the fantastic and otherworldly amphibious creatures certainly adds another layer to the lasagna. Final Italian food mention. I promise.
Featuring the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Maya Rudolph, Jim Gaffigan, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Emma Berman, Luca should be another easy, sweet time for viewers. Though it has a high bar to hurdle after top last year’s Soul was so good, and still so fresh in the mind.
No date is set for Luca just yet, though the trailer mentions Summer 2021. Until then, sneak a peek at the film’s poster.
