One of Pixar’s most beloved and well-known characters is set to get an origin story. We first got a teaser trailer look at Lightyear back in February, and now the full-length trailer made its’ debut, and it looks fantastic.
Chris Evans has gone from playing one iconic hero to another, but this time in animated form. He lends his voice to Buzz in a film shaping into a truly incredible journey. This trailer gives away the plot of the film. Buzz and his fellow members of Star Command have been stuck on a planet far from Earth for a year and are trying to get back.
Besides the trailer, we also got a sick-looking new poster for Lightyear, which releases on June 17 only in theaters.
Here is the official synopsis from Pixar:
“The definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, Lightyear follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda. A new poster and images are also available.”
While testing a new rocket that can travel at hyper-speed, things go wrong in the blink of an eye, and Buzz crash lands on another planet. There is a twist, however, time travel. Now he finds himself facing aliens, robots, and a new crew. The trailer also features a better look at Zurg. This time he looks way more menacing and less cartoonish. Fans of the original Toy Story films will remember the joke about Emperor Zurg being Buzz’s father. We have to wait and see whether that remains a pivotal plot point.
Whatever we are in for, it’s shaping up to be a good summer at the movies.
