Lee Daniels is riding high on the success of Precious right now, especially after two Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Picture. What’s his next film? According to Deadline, it may be a remake of one of Federico Fellini’s films. Daniels is currently in negotiations to film a modern version of Nights of Cabiria, the 1957 Italian classic about a friendly neighborhood prostitute who somehow gets abused every day.
Nights of Cabiria has already been remade once, in a fashion: the musical Sweet Charity is based off of Fellini’s screenplay. The film itself wasn’t entirely original to begin with, taking its name from a 1914 film called Cabiria, while the main character is inspired by an earlier film of Fellini’s, The White Sheik.
Daniels hit one out of the park with Precious, so it should be interesting to see him take on an Italian classic, assuming negotiations go through.
