Most eyes were on Disney’s investor call today not only to get a glimpse at what the House of Mouse’s theatrical and streaming plans were for the foreseeable future but to see how they would react to Warner Bros.’ shocking decision to put all of its 2021 titles onto HBO Max alongside a tradition theatrical release, one that has mightily pissed off nearly everyone involved. Would Disney do the same thing? In the case of Raya and the Last Dragon, that answer appears to be yes.
Disney recently confirmed that their upcoming animated feature will premiere on both Disney+ as well as in traditional movie theaters. The film is being labeled as a “Premier Access” title similar to how Mulan was. In case you may have forgotten, if you wanted to see Mulan when it released last September, you would have to pay $30 for the privilege to rent the movie for a three-month time period before it became free in early December. FOMO eat your heart out.
Disney has not indicated how much it will cost to be given access to the film when it releases on March 5th, but given that the film will still be releasing theatrically, one can hope that it won’t be as pricey as Mulan was. Oh who am I kidding, this is Disney we’re talking about. Of course it’ll be as expensive as Mulan was. Say what you will about WB moving it’s entire slate of movies to a simultaneous digital/theatrical release, at least they’re not charging you to rent those films on HBO Max (yet).
